Hey fellow adventurers,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the common parenting challenge we label as ‘picky eating.’ Recently, I was inspired by another parent’s post about mealtime struggles, and it made me reflect on my own approach with my preschooler, ‘Little Scout.’
We hit a wall the other day where anything new (or even vaguely green) was met with a firm ‘no!’ My first instinct was to insist, which I’ve learned is a fast track to a power struggle. Instead, I decided to reframe the whole experience. We weren’t just ‘eating lunch’; we were going on a ‘culinary expedition.’
I cut up some bell peppers, cucumbers, and carrots. The peppers became ‘red mountains,’ the cucumbers were ‘lily pads in a swamp,’ and the hummus was the ‘muddy swamp’ we had to cross. Little Scout didn’t eat everything, but for the first time in weeks, he was curious. He touched everything, he licked a ‘mountain,’ and he actually ate a ‘lily pad’!
It shifted the energy from a battle of wills to a shared, playful discovery. It reminded me that for him, this isn’t about defiance; it’s about exploring new, sometimes scary, sensory information.
This has me wondering: How have you all navigated the sometimes-choppy waters of introducing new foods? Have you found ways to turn the dinner table from a battlefield into a place of adventure and connection? I’d love to hear your stories and creative ideas for these little culinary explorers of ours.
