The other day, my little one, “Pip,” who’s usually so sunny, had a huge meltdown because his favorite blue cup was in the dishwasher. My initial reaction was to say, “It’s just a cup, we can use another one!” but I caught myself. Looking at his tear-streaked face, I realized it wasn’t about the cup at all. He’d had a long day at preschool and was just emotionally spent.

It made me wonder how often our kids’ seemingly “irrational” behaviors are just direct, unfiltered expressions of bigger feelings they can’t yet name. It’s so easy to get caught up in the surface-level issue (the cup, the wrong-colored socks, etc.) and miss the real communication happening underneath.

How do you all create that pause to look past the immediate behavior and connect with the feeling behind it? I’m curious to hear your stories about deciphering your child’s “secret language” during these tough moments. What have you learned?
