Step-by-Step Guide to Swaddling

Mastering the art of swaddling takes practice, but with these detailed steps, you’ll be wrapping like a pro in no time:

  1. Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly. Choose a flat, safe surface like a changing table or bed. Lay out a square swaddle blanket in a diamond shape. Fold down the top corner about 6 inches to create a straight edge.
  2. Positioning the Baby: Gently place your baby on their back on the blanket. Ensure their shoulders are just below the folded edge. Position their head above the blanket’s edge for safety and comfort.
  3. Securing the Left Arm: Hold your baby’s left arm gently against their body at a slight angle. Take the left corner of the blanket and pull it snugly across your baby’s chest, tucking it securely under their right side and back.
  4. Folding the Bottom: Lift the bottom corner of the blanket up over your baby’s feet. Tuck this corner into the top of the swaddle, leaving enough room for hip movement. Ensure your baby’s legs can bend naturally to promote healthy hip development.
  5. Securing the Right Arm: Gently hold your baby’s right arm against their body. Take the right corner of the blanket and wrap it over your baby’s right arm and body. Pull it snugly and tuck it under their left side and back for a secure fit.
  6. Final Adjustments: Ensure the swaddle is snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit two to three fingers between your baby’s chest and the swaddle. Check that the hips and legs have enough room to move freely.
  7. Safety Check: Verify that the swaddle is below your baby’s shoulders to keep their face clear and reduce suffocation risk. Double-check that your baby’s hips and knees can move freely within the swaddle.

The key is to make the swaddle snug around the arms but looser around the hips and legs. This ‘hip-healthy’ swaddling technique allows for natural movement and reduces the risk of hip dysplasia.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don’t be discouraged if your first attempts aren’t picture-perfect – your baby will still benefit from your efforts. With time and practice, you’ll become more confident in your swaddling technique.
