A few years ago, a large chain of shopping centers in Asia recognized that pregnant women often spend considerable time shopping. They saw enormous potential in marketing to these women, considering pregnancy one of the most crucial and emotional stages in a woman’s life. Alongside hormonal changes and the anticipation of new life, it’s a period when women are susceptible. Thus, the shopping center experimented with subconscious marketing through scents and sounds.
Initially, they sprayed baby powder scent in the clothing section and infused the food court with the smell of cherries. Simultaneously, they played soothing music on a loop. The company aimed to boost the purchasing enthusiasm of pregnant women, and it proved successful—they achieved their desired effects.
However, there was an unexpected bonus. About a year after the experiment concluded, the shopping center received numerous letters from mothers saying their babies had become “addicted” to the center. Upon entering, babies would immediately quiet down. If babies arrived upset or crying, they would immediately settle down upon entering the shopping center. Sixty percent of these mothers reported that they hadn’t experienced this phenomenon elsewhere, even in places with similar scents and sounds.
Upon analyzing these intriguing findings, the management inferred that the scents of baby powder and cherries, combined with the comforting sounds (including mothers’ heartbeats, children’s laughter, carefully selected instruments, and repetitive rhythms), had penetrated the womb.
Prenatal Education
The journey from a fertilized egg to a fully formed human being takes around 40 weeks. During this relatively short span, the fetus undergoes a miraculous and intricate process of development, eventually emerging as an independent individual.
